The KIPP LA Family Ambassador volunteers hosted a Family Day of Action event on National Voter Registration Day. Read on for more details.

On National Voter Registration Day, September 26, 2017, over 100 families and community members gathered at KIPP Empower Academy in South Los Angeles to celebrate the community and learn more about how to make their voices heard through IMG_5520.jpgcommunity engagement.

Community partners including Voto Latino, New York Life insurance, NALEO Educational Fund, County of Los Angeles Public Libraries and the LAPD 77th division & community liaisons among others hosted resource tables at the event. Colgate also sponsored a free, dental health screening bus for children.

Mayra Salazar, KIPP LA Family & Community Engagement Senior Manager, explained that “it’s important for the community see KIPP LA as a partner in the neighborhood. Close to forty percent of attendees were not KIPP families, but community members surrounding KIPP Empower Academy. Now they can come visit us and look to us as a resource right  in their backyard!”

The joyful event included a photo booth, raffle, and student performances by KIPP Academy of Opportunity’s drumline, the Harmony Project’s mariachi band, KIPP Scholar Academy’s choir, and music provided by a KIPP Academy of Opportunity student and resident DJ.

If you missed the event, there are still several ways to get involved, get engaged, and get registered:

  • Visit www.kipp.org/votes to register to vote
  • Talk to others about the importance of voting and being involved in your community
  • Attend local community meetings and speak out on issues that matter to you and your family
