KIPP Promesa Prep, a KIPP SoCal elementary school in Boyle Heights, recently received recognition from the California PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) Coalition for their implementation of PBIS with fidelity to the national framework.
Schools were able to apply to be recognized as Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum PBIS schools by providing information about Tier 1 TFI (Tiered Fidelity Inventory) scores and ODR (Office Discipline Referral) percentage, submitting an action plan to improve one TFI feature from Tier 1, and allowing an external reviewer to visit the school. KIPP Promesa received the acknowledgement of Silver after just one year of PBIS adoption in their school.
KIPP Promesa School Leader, Adriana Rodriguez, credits her team, and their PBIS coach, KIPP Promesa Dean Kimmy Walker, with the successful implementation. Ms. Rodriguez shares that Ms. Walker “has led us through this journey, and has taken the feedback from our students and team to make it a better and stronger system at Promesa.”
She notes that upon adoption of PBIS, the school “saw a significant change in our students, and in ourselves as educators,” adding that “we are proud that our students have internalized our school expectations - they are safe, they are responsible, and they are respectful.”
Ms. Rodriguez looks forward to other schools to learn from their experience at KIPP Promesa “because we truly believe this is a system that works for all kids, and it is best for kids.”
This year, she and her team plan to go for gold recognition! Congratulations, KIPP Promesa Prep!!
